In 1964, the Halifax City Regional Library Board received $100,000 from the Halifax Relief Commission to use to support the building of a library in the north end of Halifax which would commemorate the victims of the 1917 Halifax Explosion.

The branch houses a copy of the Halifax Explosion Remembrance Book which lists the names of the 1,951 identified victims, their ages, their local residential addresses at the time of the disaster, and their subsequent places of burial.
